Golf great Greg "The Shark" Norman is taking another big bite out of Colorado with a golf course design for the Cornerstone Club. Located in Southwest Colorado near Montrose, Norman’s latest signature course is the crown jewel of the new golf and equestrian club community.

Telluride. Photograph by Stephen Collector. (Click image to enlarge)Spanning approximately 6,000 acres, Cornerstone will allow for only 412 single-family homesites—leaving more than 3,000 acres for permanent open space adjacent to the Uncompahgre National Forest. There are 284 quarter-acre lots and 108 lots that range from one to 10 acres. The community is also offering 20 ranches, each sized from 20 to 200 acres. Of the initial wave of properties released for sale in January 2006, one-acre lots start at $400,000 and a 53-acre ranch is listed at $1.5 million.
To ensure the property’s integrity, all one-quarter-acre resort
village lots will back up to open space, and Hunt Realty, the developer, will
determine all building envelopes for the entire project—a fitting arrangement
considering Cornerstone’s location among aspen forests and rolling meadows. The
four-season, private second home community is about an hour’s drive from the
ski town of Telluride, and a short distance from the historic mining town of
Ouray and the regional transportation and commercial hub of Montrose.

"The location and the land is what sets us apart," says
Cornerstone Club’s general manager, Jim Mikula. "With 22 miles of fencing, we
have tremendous opportunities for anybody who wants to live the Colorado outdoor
life yet be in a five-star hotel setting."
Norman’s golf course is currently under construction with an anticipated opening date of summer 2007 to coincide with the completion of the first residences. At completion, the private equity golf club will include upscale dining, a swim and fitness center, tennis courts and special club area for kids. There are also horse stables, and trail systems are being designed to accommodate the most discriminating outdoor types and will include paths for horseback riding, cross-country skiing, hiking and biking. In the winter, the stocked fishing ponds will become ice-skating rinks.
