In the late 1960s, Italian banking heir Gian Franco Brignone built a luxury hotel, the El Careyes Beach Resort, on a stretch of unspoiled coastline about two hours south of Puerto Vallarta. He later enlisted Marco Aldaco to design homes in the area, and, as a result, the exclusive Careyes community’s distinctive look is often attributed to the Mexican architect. Although his bright, open palapa style permeates the small beach destination, known as Costa Careyes, Aldaco opted for a more modern look for his own 5,600-square-foot villa.
