Hollywood cements its cowboy connection.

Ranch ownership in the West has always been a romantic proposition prompted by nostalgia, freedom, privacy and the ability to lord it over endless acres of untouched land. The West has tempted high-tech, cable, media and investment moguls, and, of course, Hollywood has long heeded its siren call. The boundaries range from Taos, N.M., where Julia Roberts has her own spread, to Montana’s Paradise Valley, where Dennis Quaid, Jeff Bridges and Peter Fonda are homesteaders. In Idaho, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has a ranch. Ted Turner is one of the largest private landowners in the United States, with 1.7 million acres. Today, if a river runs through it, so does a Jacuzzi, plus several head of cattle, your own wine cellar, a private airstrip and a lifestyle that speaks to the American dream unlike any other.

The call of the West is so alluring that Los Angeles realtors Mossler Deasy & Doe, known for focusing on architecturally significant properties, recently launched an alliance with Colorado ranch specialist brokers Ron Morris and Billy Long, based in Denver and Aspen, respectively, to form Ranch Marketing Associates.

For high-net-worth individuals at the top of the A-list, owning a ranch with serious acreage, cattle, horses and even a few tax advantages is simply irresistible, and the trend never seems to fade into the sunset. “Many of our clients are type A personalities, and they need an outlet,” says George Penner, COO at Mossler Deasy & Doe. “Ranches serve as third homes to some of these folks, and they love the privacy and some of the challenges of the lifestyle.” The players on RMA’s roster include Whoopi Goldberg and cable magnate John Malone.
